Performance

Ceramic and porcelain usually have a rating of 1 to 5 for their overall durability and abrasion resistance. Five being the most durable. Check the label to see the rating. Porcelain is denser than ceramic and can many times be used outside in climates where temperatures get below freezing.
Construction

Ceramic is a broad category of clay-based tile. Porcelain is a type of ceramic that produces a denser tile, which makes it more water-resistant and can have greater breaking strength.

Tile is the best choice for cost-effectiveness and to use in areas that won’t regularly be exposed to liquids. Porcelain tile is the best choice for areas that may see more moisture such as the bathroom. Ceramic is easier to cut, while porcelain requires heavier cutting equipment.

Here are tips we recommend for any flooring in your home or business:
Regular Sweeping or Vacuuming: Dust, dirt, and debris can accumulate on the surface, potentially causing scratches. Sweep or vacuum the floors regularly using a soft-bristle broom or a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment.
Spot Cleaning: Attend to spills promptly to prevent staining. Use a soft cloth or sponge with a mild vinyl floor cleaner to clean up spills. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals.
Use Entrance Mats: Place doormats at entryways to capture dirt and grit before it reaches the vinyl floor. This can help prevent scratches and extend the life of the flooring.

A Tile Store in Dayton, Not a Tile Aisle
We have been selling tile from 3609 Linden Avenue since 1965. What that means in practice is a showroom where tile is displayed at a size you can actually judge, samples that go home with you at no charge, and somebody who can tell you whether the tile you like belongs on the floor you want to put it on.
What We Carry
- Porcelain — floors, walls, wood-look planks, large-format, and the through-body porcelain that hides a chip rather than showing a white scar.
- Ceramic — walls and backsplashes, including hand-glazed with real variation between pieces.
- Natural stone — marble, travertine, slate and limestone, selected slab by slab where the material warrants it.
- Mosaic and specialty — penny round, hexagon, herringbone, zellige and zellige-look, encaustic and cement-look patterns.
- Large-format and slab for showers and full-height backsplashes.
- Trim, profiles and waterproofing — the parts that decide whether the finished job looks resolved.
Sixty years of buying means we reach lines that never make it onto a warehouse shelf, including mills that sell only through independents. If you have seen something elsewhere, bring us a photograph — we can usually source it or better it.
What Tile Costs
Material: roughly $2 to $8 per square foot for most porcelain and ceramic, $10 to $30 for natural stone and specialty handmade tile.
Installed: roughly $9 to $16 per square foot for a standard layout, $14 to $24 for large-format, herringbone or pattern work — see tile installation.
The gap between those two numbers is where people underestimate a tile project. Prep, setting materials, waterproofing and trim are most of the cost, and they are the parts a low bid leaves out.
Choosing Tile That Suits the Room
Ask for the PEI rating on anything going on a floor. Wall tile on a floor wears through its glaze. PEI 4 or better for a busy household.
Slip resistance matters in a bathroom. Smaller tile means more grout lines and more grip. A large polished tile in a wet room is a bad idea however good it looks dry.
Grout color is half the result. Matched grout makes a floor read as one continuous surface; contrasting grout turns the same tile into a pattern. It costs nothing and it is the decision people most often regret.
Handmade tile is supposed to vary. Zellige and hand-glazed ceramic arrive with variation in tone, thickness and edge. That is the point of them, and it is why they need an installer who has set them before.
Buy enough. Order 10-15% over for cuts and waste, more for herringbone or diagonal layouts. Running short mid-job on a discontinued lot is a genuinely bad day.

Porcelain
Regular, basic cleaning with warm water and mild soap is sufficient to keep porcelain floors looking good.
You can also use gentle, everyday multipurpose spray cleaner to remove soap scum, hard water deposits, and mildew.
Do not use cleaning products that contain acids or ammonia (and other harsh chemicals) as these can damage grout and glazed surfaces of the tile.
